From Arrival to Pickup: What Really Happens to Your Container at the Port of Baltimore

A step-by-step breakdown for anyone who's ever wondered why "your container arrived" doesn't mean you can pick it up tomorrow.

The Phone Call That Started It All

"Your container arrived in Baltimore."

Six simple words. And for about five seconds, you think: Great, let's go get it. Then reality hits.

I remember my first container like it was yesterday. No freight agent  - just a customs broker who got back to me once every three hours. The container was sitting at Seagirt Marine Terminal, and the demurrage clock was already ticking.

Dozens of emails a day. Endless hold music with the steamship line. The terminal saying one thing, customs saying another, and delivery services quoting prices that changed by the hour.

That experience - stressful as it was - taught me more about ocean logistics than any course or certification ever could.

Step 1: Before the Vessel Even Arrives

By law, the Importer Security Filing (ISF) must be submitted at least 24 hours before the vessel departs. Miss this deadline? That's a $5,000 fine per container.

Step 2: Vessel Arrival and Discharge

The ship pulls into Seagirt Marine Terminal. Your container isn't immediately available - it takes 12-24 hours after discharge before eModal shows "Available for pickup."

Step 3: Customs Release

Best case: 24-48 hours. Worst case with examination: 5-7+ days and $500-1,000+ in fees.

Step 4: Free Time and Demurrage

You get 4 business days of free time. After that - demurrage kicks in at $150-350 per day.

Step 5: Pickup Options

Option A: Live Load - trucker picks up the whole container, delivers to warehouse, returns empty.

Option B: Transload - strip container at port, reload onto domestic trailer.

Lessons from the Trenches

1. Relationships matter

2. Check eModal multiple times a day

3. Build in buffer time - pick up by day 2 if free time is 4 days

4. Document everything

5. Learn the systems

Stress is a lousy teacher. But damn, is it effective.
